Photo Friday: The Birds
There are days when I really don’t want to go to work. Pretty much any day other than Friday, actually. Everyone is in a better mood on Friday, it seems, with the light of the weekend at the end of the weekday tunnel. It takes the edge off. That said, my workplace is in a very pretty location. On those mornings when I wish I could be somewhere else, I try to take a look around before I go inside (the aesthetic isn’t quite as good inside) and appreciate the surroundings.
On two such occasions, I took the photos below. I particularly like the Ma and Pa Canada Goose waddling around with their gosling family. The geese can actually be a bit of a nuisance around my workplace. Lots of grass, on the water, it’s a favourite nesting place of theirs. They come in droves in the spring and fall. They compete with the sea gulls to see who can leave the most poop everywhere, and they block traffic as they stroll, leisurely, across the road single file. But they are also a source of amusement, and the babies are pretty cute.
The cormorant pic was taken zoomed in, and under the glare of the sun. It didn’t turn out as clear as I would have liked, but I enjoyed watching him hang out on the buoy looking left and right. The weather was perfect. Warm sun, cool breeze blowing off the lake. I had to admit there are worse places to be.
Shortly after taking the cormorant photo, I got to see a seagull swimming a circle around a dead fish (about the same length as the gull) trying to figure out how best to tackle such a large prize. I didn’t take a picture of that. Just as well, who wants to see a picture of a dead fish. It was, however, a ‘that’s mother nature for you’ kind of moment.
